It was my first time to have a study abroad experience and I was glad to have University of Chicago as my destination.
From the moment my friends and I saw sunrise on the boundless lake, I fell in love with this lively city. We looked over Chicago from the sky deck on top of Willis Tower, had traditional American style BBQ with Ian, went shopping and ate deep-dish pizza between the skyscrapers in the loop, visited museums and aquarium which look archaic outside but modern inside…… It couldn’t be more fun exploring Chicago.
As for study, my favorite part was teaching elderly citizens how to use high-tech devices. Seeing them learn to send photos to their children was such a gratifying thing. In this charming campus, study became so interesting. It was really an enjoyment to study under the tree on the lawn or even argue on the beach with your friends. Five weeks spent here will be a lovely memory forever.
What impressed me most in class is that the atmosphere here was so great. The frequent interaction between teachers and students kept students interested. Everyone was allowed to make mistakes, and nobody was afraid of asking or answering questions.
The economics class put emphasis on real world examples and data, helping us learn how economic theory works and giving us a big view of today’s global economy.
English class gave us some opportunities to do different kinds of projects like teaching senior citizens to use hi-tech devices and explore different neighborhoods in Chicago. We were trying to use English to do practical things in daily life, rather than just learn English itself. This was a huge difference from any English class I have ever taken before.
In my spare time I also had l lot of things to do for fun: swimming in the athletics center, enjoying the sunrise at the Lake Michigan shore, visiting all kinds of museums, and going to the Cubs baseball game. Our nice RA cared for us and arranged most of these great activities for us.
My five weeks in Chicago will be a precious memory forever!
