On a nice summer day we flew to the University of Chicago and got our ID cards. Happily, a new journey of study began.
The teachers were professional. The instructor of Introduction to Money and Banking, Mr. Kotaro Yoshida, knew the Macroeconomics textbook very well and combined it with the latest news and situations in other countries. He gave me a big picture of how things work in this area and at the same time important details of how we should study it. Not only did we get knowledge, but we also learned how to look at question and various methods of deriving questions.
During the Intensive Academic English class we discussed topics on various themes. We actively exchanged our ideas, switching teammates every round. We visited the Booth School of Business, the Chicago Innovation Exchange, and different neighborhoods. We talked to different people, listened to their stories, views and values.
Aside from wandering in the school, we explored the city. We ran into different people. We met UChicago students at the lakeshore, in outlet stores. They talked about their lives and views on China. Surprisingly, some spoke highly of Chinese education. They said ‘Schools in China are very good, just some don’t have enough fame,’ and had strong confidence in our education system. They knew a lot of cities in China. Many of them mentioned the high tuition fee they must pay, which made us feel truly lucky about ours’ situation. Students at UChicago are busy, but still they try a lot of things and care about a lot of stuff.
A lot of fun things happened. We had a nice time here with our friends, classmates, and people from all over the world. We played Frisbee and threw a football on the beach, walked alone by the river, and sat under the big trees in school.
I went to the UChicago Chemistry lab. A post-doctorate student from China took me on a small tour around the whole research center communicating why he came here and his life here.
We went kayaking on Chicago River, which was fun and at the same time allowed us to appreciate the architecture along the river.
We met a couple from Shanghai who helped us when we were tried to buy ice cream but had no cash and only credit card on us.
I appreciate the chance the school offered me. This is an amazing summer accompanied by precious friends. We see, we come and we listened. Hope we all can find a way to where we want to go.
